WESTMORE, Vt. (AP) A long-running event involving people jumping into a freezing cold lake in Vermont is ending.
The New Year's Willoughby Dip sought to raise money for the annual Relay For Life of Caledonia County and the American Cancer Society and would have turned 14 this winter. The Caledonian-Record reports dangerously cold temperatures forced cancellation of last year's dip. Founder Fred Laferriere concluded the annual plunge had run its course.
The Willoughby Dip helped lead to the creation of the Caledonia County Relay For Life, which has, in turn, raised a large amount of money to benefit the American Cancer Society and its programs. Laferriere began the annual plunge in honor of his brother Jake, who died in 2000.
