Guildhall courthouse damaged by fire

GUILDHALL, Vt. (WCAX) The Guildhall courthouse is closed following a fire Tuesday.

Officials say the fire broke out while hearings were underway and those inside were evacuated. It appears to have started in a vault in the file room. Damage was limited to that room, but smoke damage extended to most of the building. No one was hurt in the incident.

There was no immediate word on what caused the fire. The tiny courthouse is not equipped with fire sprinklers.

Court officials say the affected files in the vault were all closed cases, but they are still assessing damage.

Hearing schedules and locations will be posted on the Judiciary website once they are determined.
