Hannaford breaks ground on new South Burlington spot

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) Construction appears to be starting to move Hannaford to its new location off Shelburne Road.

We noticed heavy equipment breaking ground in the parking lot of the site.

It used to be a Kmart before that closed three years ago. The property is owned by Hannaford and they intend to move their supermarket around the corner to expand into the Kmart site. The grocer promised a considerably bigger store once it's open.

South Burlington City Manager Kevin Dorn says he's not sure what will happen to their current store's location.

"They lease that building. They do not own the building, as I understand it. So I am unaware of what may go in there. Again, it's a great site as well," Dorn said.

Hannaford told us they will replace the front facade to upgrade the building's appearance but the building itself will stay. And they will have a better sense of when it will open after they do some of the infrastructure work this winter and spring.
