How the Green Mountain 'Baby Bust' is changing a Vermont town

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) The number of children in Vermont is shrinking.

The most recent data for the last school year shows there were 75,000 K-12 students. Compare that to almost 96,000 at the turn of the century.

One of the problems is Vermont's low birth rate. If we look at Essex County in the Northeast Kingdom, you can see in 2016 more than 6,100 people lived there. The numbers show 76 died, but only 53 were born.

Galen Ettlin spoke with Seven Day's Molly Walsh, who zeroed in on one Essex County community -- Guildhall -- to see how this is affecting real people.
