Hunger Free Vermont's 3 Squares Challenge is underway.

The challenge raises awareness for the fact that one in ten Vermonters live in food insecure households and are unable to fully meet basic hunger needs.

This week's challenge to raise awareness asks community members to live on a food budget of 37 dollars a week, which amounts to the 3SquareVT benefit.

“It's a way for folks to sort of experience what it might be like to live on a more restricted food budget for a week and that's what a lot of folks in our community have to face every day,” said Drake Turner of Hunger Free Vermont.

The 3squares program serves nearly 78,000 Vermonters a year. Hunger Free Vermont says that number is down from a few years ago.
