How common is elder abuse in Vermont?

A mother and son are accused of abusing an 85-year-old in Rutland Town. The victim was brought to the hospital with numerous life-threatening injuries and infections and is in stable condition. Police believe the victim was abused and neglected.

Clayton Clark runs the Adult Protective Division for the Vermont Agency of Human Services. They investigate abuse, neglect and exploitation. His office receives about 4,000 reports of mistreatment a year. Up to half of them result in an investigation.

Clark spoke with our Galen Ettlin to help us better understand the problem of elder abuse in our community and how to identify the signs. Watch the video for the full interview.
