Interim chief selected for St. Albans Police

ST. ALBANS CITY, Vt. (WCAX) Starting next week, St. Albans City will have a new interim police chief.

Maurice Lamothe will take over July 1. Longtime St. Albans Police Chief Gary Taylor resigned last month in the wake of a no-confidence vote from police union officials. The department has recently faced multiple allegations of brutality by officers. Over the last seven months, three officers have been terminated or resigned and one more is facing criminal charges.

City Manager Dominic Cloud has insisted that the retirement announcement and the vote from the union are not related but admitted Taylor was in a tough situation. He says Lamothe has a management style that is a good fit with the challenges the department faces.

Lamothe is well known in the community and was born and raised in St. Albans.
