WASHINGTON (WCAX) Sen. Patrick Leahy is remembering former President George H.W. Bush as a politician who would reach across the aisle.
Bush was memorialized during a state funeral in Washington, D.C., Wednesday. He died last week at the age of 94 after a lifetime of public service. Wednesday was declared a National Day of Mourning in his honor.
Vermont's senior senator recalled Bush as a politician who worked with both parties.
"You could joke, you could be a real person with him and he was effective in a number of things, including foreign policy things. Because, number one, he was very knowledgeable and secondly, he would work with both Republicans and Democrats to get a coalition," said Leahy, D-Vermont.
After the funeral, his body was flown home to Texas. Bush will be buried there Thursday next to his wife and daughter.
