ROYALTON, Vt. (WCAX) The sudden resignation of a Royalton police officer has people asking why. And now the community is left with just one officer on the force.
Here's what we've learned from sources. John Breault is a nine-year veteran of the Royalton PD. He submitted his resignation Monday night. He had been essentially serving as the acting chief since the chief stepped down last spring.
But we also learned that Wednesday federal agents were at the police department, particularly focused on the evidence room. The events surprised Royalton Select Board Chair Larry Trottier.
"I spoke to John Monday and things seemed to be fine," Trottier said. "He didn't give any particular reasons, it was just personal reasons. So that's what we had to go with."
Sources tell us the FBI and DEA are looking into allegations Breault may have given heroin from a drug bust to his girlfriend. We reached out to Breault's lawyer. He declined to comment.
As for the town police force, a search committee is looking for candidates to hire people. And in the meantime, Trottier tells us the Vermont State Police will be helping to cover the community.
