NEWPORT CITY, Vt. (AP) A Vermont man accused of killing his ex-wife's husband will seek a diminished capacity defense at his trial.
Fifty-five-year-old Jeffrey Ray, of Brownington, said Tuesday he agreed to the defense after he initially filed a request for a new attorney - previously objecting to the proposed defense. The Caledonian-Record reports Ray is accused of shooting and killing his neighbor and ex-wife's husband Rick Vreeland on Memorial Day 2015.
Ray is currently being held without bail and has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. A judge in Orleans Superior Court recently rejected a motion to suppress a confession by Ray.
A trial is expected to begin at the end of next January.
