Man accused of sexually assaulting dying woman takes plea deal
The man accused of sexually assaulting an elderly woman as she lay on her death bed has taken a plea deal.
Police say Stephen Edwards, 71, was caught committing a lewd act last July at the Burlington Health and Rehab.
According to court paperwork, a nurse entered the woman's room to administer morphine and found Edwards sexually abusing her.
The woman, who was in hospice care, died several days after the alleged incident.
"I don't want to speak for the victim's family but I know that ones that I have spoken with wanted to see a resolution in this case. And this brings them some type of closure without having to go through the trial process," Chittenden County Deputy State's Attorney Dana DiSano said.
Edwards declined to comment to reporters outside of court.
He must register as a sex offender and faces two to five years in jail.
