BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) A Vermont man has pleaded guilty to a charge he stabbed to death an elderly Arlington woman in her home more than two years ago.
The Bennington Banner reports Timothy Butler, 34, pleaded guilty Friday to a charge of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of Helen Jones, 81, in her home in early January 2017. Butler had been charged with first-degree murder.
In court, Butler admitted stabbing Jones multiple times.
Defense attorney Brian Marsicovetere told the judge Butler "has accepted responsibility" for the crime.
Bennington County State's Attorney Erica Marthage said Jones' family members supported the plea because it would spare them a trial.
The victim's daughter, Teresa Jones, says the family is looking forward to the sentencing, which has not been scheduled.
Butler could get 30 years to life.
