Milton Police respond to use-of-force allegations in Black teen's arrest

MILTON, Vt. (WCAX) Milton Police are responding to what they call misinformation on social media about use-of-force during the arrest of a Black teen last month.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, police say they investigated after multiple businesses were burglarized on April 30. They say they attempted to arrest a 17-year-old suspect from New Jersey and that he attempted to escape after giving officers a fake name and date of birth. He was later arrested on May 10.

Police say video of the arrest posted Thursday on social media erroneously claimed the arrest happened this week. Police also denied accusations that officers used a Taser on the teen several times. Officials say that while the officers had a Taser drawn, it was never used.

Police say a review of the arrest found the officers used the necessary amount of force. They say the state's lead use-of-force instructor has been asked to review the incident.

"Given the current and past events occurring in law enforcement, we believe it is extremely important to be open and transparent with all use-of-force incidents," Milton Police officials said in a statement.
