New air service takes off in Plattsburgh
Wednesday was a big day for the Plattsburgh International Airport! SkyWest Airlines' first flight to the airport arrived at about 2:30 p.m.
This is part of the Essential Air Service contract through the Department of Transportation. That contract calls for two daily flights to Dulles International Airport in D.C., a major United hub that will connect Plattsburgh to major cities worldwide.
"We began this mission 10 years ago," said Garry Douglas of the North Country Chamber of Commerce. "We started with a low-cost air carrier for vacation destinations that's been highly successful from the very beginning. And we always hoped and knew that that would prove the market to the legacy carrier like United, so eventually, we would attract one of them to do first-class hub service and now we have that."
Riders on the inaugural flight said it was smooth.
SkyWest is still filling positions at the airport.
