Next step in Northern New York school merger

ELIZABETHTOWN, N.Y. (WCAX) So what's next now that a school merger has passed in Northern New York?

Next school year, the Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School District and Westport Central School District will consolidate into one district. The votes weighed heavily in favor of the merger:

Westport
329 Yes
199 No

Elizabethtown
421 Yes
49 No
2 Blank
1 Void

So what now? First, they must select a new board of education. After Tuesday's vote, it was decided there will be seven members on the board of education.

"So very, very soon the new school board will be established because they will have legal authority to make decisions for the new district ahead of its July first opening," Superintendent Scott Osborne explained.

You have until Dec. 31 to apply for the position. The vote will be Jan. 15.
