BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (WCAX) - The Windham Orchestra is letting four folks become guest conductors at a future rehearsal at the Brattleboro Music Center. The soon-to-be maestros won a raffle to get this chance.
Earlier in the week, three of the four participants got pointers from Windham Orchestra conductor, Hugh Keelan.
His message to the participants was that conducting is more about listening than leading.
"These are people with a love for music and they've got big thumping hearts and that's the bit that actually communicates," Keelan said. "So, it's just a little bit of work to have people simply express themselves."
"I'm not nervous yet, but I'm sure I will be, but I know many of the people, so I hope that they don't judge me too harshly," guest conductor, Janet Wallstein said.
This is the first year for the guest conductor fundraiser for the Windham Orchestra. It raised around $2000.
"We want people to know about Windham Orchestra," event organizer, Jessica Murrow said. "We want to have more of a presence in Brattleboro and the surrounding area. We are almost entirely volunteer and I play in Windham for free and so do most of everyone else in the orchestra, because otherwise it wouldn't exist."
