Outbreak of drug-resistant infection at Vt. retirement community

SHELBURNE, Vt. (WCAX) The Vermont Department of Health is investigating an outbreak of a drug-resistant infection at a local retirement community.

The CDC is joining the investigation at Wake Robin in Shelburne. Officials say the outbreak is from Shigella bacteria, which causes similar symptoms as the flu.

So far, 22 cases are confirmed and another 44 probable cases are pending. All are Wake Robin staff, residents or visitors.

Shigellosis spreads easily. Some people may have no symptoms but can still spread it.

Officials haven't found the source.
