BERLIN, Vt. (WCAX) Police now say a fire that damaged a Vermont spa was intentionally set by the owners.
Fire crews battled the blaze at the Sundara Day Spa in Berlin Sunday evening. A family who lived upstairs escaped unharmed.
Thursday, Vermont State Police said the owners of the business, Lesilee Kirby, 48, and Kristopher Kirby, 47, both of East Montpelier, now face arson charges.
Police say firefighters battling the blaze noticed a strong smell of an accelerant, possibly gas, and they found a partially burned gas container. Investigators say surveillance video from neighboring businesses revealed who set the fire. They say Kristopher Kirby poured gas in the building and set the fire, and then took off to a nearby business where he had parked his car.
Police say the Kirbys both plotted the fire, in part due to financial issues with the business. They both face charges of first-degree arson of an occupied dwelling.
The building was damaged by the fire but it is not a total loss.
