VERNON, Vt. (WCAX) Authorities in Vernon are investigating an apparent home invasion by a man with a rifle.

Officials say it happened Sunday around 9:30 p.m. at home on Vernon Estates Drive. Windham County deputies say a man reported that someone with a gun had entered the home where he and his elderly father live.

Police formed a perimeter around the home and evacuated nearby homes. They also called in the State Police tactical unit to search the house but officials say nobody was found inside.

Police continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information to call them.

Newton Road has been reopened and the evacuated families have been allowed to return to their homes.
