Possible plea deal in deadly Essex crash

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) A possible plea deal for an Essex man accused of killing his girlfriend and assaulting her father.

Riley Watkins

Police say Riley Watkins was drunk last year when he took a corner too fast in Essex and hit a pole, killing his girlfriend Emma Press, 24. Court papers showed Watkins' blood alcohol level was 0.196-- more than twice the legal limit.

Watkins is charged with DUI death resulting. He also faces aggravated domestic assault charges for allegedly choking Press' father.

Watkins is due in court Friday to change his plea.

Press' father and his lawyer sent the judge a letter begging him to reject the deal, calling it too lenient.
