Racers from as far away as California are heading to New York's North Country for a unique race.

The 8th annual Octoberfest Half Marathon in Peru offers a 10K, 5K, 40K bike route, and its namesake -- the half-marathon.

The event brings in people from as far as California because of what the race represents. Robert Hamilton of Peru died just months before the first race eight years ago from the rare lung disease pulmonary fibrosis. Since the beginning, more and more people effected by the disease have joined the event.

"I think he would be blown away. He's very -- I don't know -- not into recognition or anything like that, so I think he would be very subtle about everything, but be happy and talking to everyone. He would enjoy race day, said Ruth LaClaire, Hamilton's daughter.

The race starts Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Peru Fire Department.
