MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) The results of the 2018 Smarter Balanced Assessment achievement tests are in. Vermont students made modest improvements, but still have a long way to go.
The so-called SBACs test 3rd through 9th grade students in English and math. In English, fourth graders showed the greatest improvement, scoring seven points more than last year. But fifth graders lost ground scoring about one point less.
More than half of all students are considered proficient in English.
Fifth graders scored one point less in math, too. And 6th graders made the biggest gains -- up three points over last year.
The proficiency rating for math is even lower than for English -- in the 40-percent range.
