Criminal, civil cases filed against sex assault suspect
The victim in a high profile kidnapping and sex assault case has filed a lawsuit against the state of Vermont and the drug treatment center her assailant walked out of.
The victim filed a civil lawsuit Monday against the state and Valley Vista over their handling of Everett Simpson's case. Simpson faces new state charges -- in addition to the federal ones -- for the alleged crime spree.
The 41-year-old is accused of kidnapping the woman and her son outside a New Hampshire mall and then bringing them to a Vermont hotel where he raped her.
The Windsor County State's Attorney Friday filed aggravated sex assault charges against Simpson as well as charges of operating a vehicle without the owner's consent.
Simpson allegedly left Valley Vista drug treatment center in Bradford on January 4 and then carried out the crimes. He was later caught in Pennsylvania.
Simpson has pleaded not guilty to the federal kidnapping charges. No court date has been set for the state ones.
