Look out for snowmobilers buzzing through the streets of downtown Newport.

In en effort to get more people out on snowmobiles, the Orleans County Snowmobile Association opened a new trail this year running through Broadview Avenue and Landing Street. The association's Roger Gosselin has been pushing for this expansion for years but had to address safety concerns from city residents. Roger Gosselin says he hopes the increased traffic boosts the local economy.

"The goal of making Newport Vermont's snowmobile city has really been achieved. We're going back behind businesses along the route 105 causeway and it's only about a minute and 30 second walk to get to Main Street," Gosselin said.

Snowmobilers riding through city limits have a curfew of 10 p.m. on Broadview Avenue and 11 p.m. on Landing Street, and riders can only drive 10 miles per hour.
