State approves sale of Vermont Yankee to decommissioning firm

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) Vermont's Public Utility Commission has approved the transfer of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant to Northstar for accelerated cleanup.

Northstar is a national provider of large-scale demolition services.

The PUC says they've committed to an accelerated schedule for decommissioning the plant and restoring the site beginning no later than 2021 and finishing by 2030. They say the proposal will advance the decommissioning schedule by more than 30 years.

The commission acknowledged the possibility of unforeseen costs but says the benefits outweigh the potential risks.
