UPDATE: Two dead in Rutland structure fire

Another building in Rutland City caught fire.

The vacant, two-story brick building at 160 S. Main Street is located next to Town Fair Tire.

Rutland Fire and Police Departments and Vermont State Police are currently investigating both fires.


Vermont State Police and the Rutland City Fire Department are investigating a fire that happened Saturday afternoon in Rutland.

The Rutland City Fire Department responded to an active structure fire around 4:20 p.m. at 41 Baxter Street.

Upon arrival, crews discovered two people dead at the scene.

Investigators from the Rutland City Police Department and the Vermont State Police Arson Unit, along with representatives from the Vermont Medical Examiner’s Office, performed an initial investigation of the scene.

The identity of the two people is not known at this time, but the bodies have been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington for an autopsy.

An ongoing investigation is being conducted by Rutland City Police Investigators, Vermont State Police Arson Unit Investigators, and the Vermont Medical Examiner’s Office into the cause of the fire and the deaths of the two people.
