Vandals target vehicles in Burlington
"This is thousands of dollars," Destenie Vital said.
Vital was getting into her luxury BMW Tuesday morning when something unusual caught her eye. The material covering her rear brake lights and much of her trunk was severely damaged.
"There's a crack here and there's another crack here-- all of this will have to be replaced," she said.
As Vital looked closer, she realized her car was intentionally vandalized. That's when she called the police and found out she wasn't alone.
"Since January first, we've had approximately 24 different incidents," Burlington Police Lt. Michael Warren said.
Burlington Police say multiple detectives have started searching for whoever has been shooting out windows of parked cars using BB guns. The innocent victims appear to be random and unconnected. Some have had as many as five windows shot out, adding up to thousands of dollars in damage that's not always fully covered by insurance.
"We're taking it very seriously," Warren said. "The dollar amount is adding up very quickly."
The targeted neighborhoods are spread across the city and the shootings are typically carried out late at night or early in the morning. No people have been hurt so far, just their wallets and peace of mind.
"Whoever it is, I hope they turn themselves in," Vital said. "And if not, if they can't find the courage to do that, I just hope they get their lives together."
Police say they do have several leads. They are asking anyone who lives in the neighborhoods that were hit to check their home surveillance system if they have one. They're also offering up to a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call Burlington Police at 802-540-2269 or Champlain Valley Crime Stoppers at 802-864-6666.
