MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) Officials at the Vermont Department of Labor say someone who was not authorized accessed the state's unemployment claim system portal and money was paid out.
Deputy Commissioner Michael Harrington wouldn't say Monday how much money was lost, but said the intended recipients have gotten their money.
Police are investigating, while the state Agency of Digital Services has added additional security measures to monitoring accounts.
It is believed the situation is limited to individuals with active unemployment claims. The people whose accounts were compromised were notified Monday by phone.
The voicemail said: "Anyone with an account in the system should actively monitor their online and credit activity while the State Police investigate this issue. If you believe your account information has been compromised, contact the department by filing a report online at www.labor.vermont.gov/fraud."
They will also be notified by mail.
They're being advised to be extra vigilant when handling all their accounts.
