Vermont man pleads guilty to aggravated assault on baby

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) A man accused of beating a 3-month-old baby will now spend three to eight years in prison for his crimes. This is after he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and resisting arrest in Chittenden County Court Thursday.

"I deserve to be in jail for what I did," Bryan Palmer said in court.

Court documents say Palmer, of Johnson, was watching the child for his parents in February when he injured the 3-month-old, leading to a broken femur, bleeding in the brain and retinal hemorrhaging. The child was intubated at the UVM Medical Center but survived.

The baby's mother showed pictures of him in court Thursday and read a statement to the judge.

"It killed us all," she said. "We are now very blessed and thankful KM's development is going today with no complications. He is now just like any other baby."

Investigators say it was a case that took a lot of hard work.

"It was a very fair and fast resolution to this very serious crime," said Cpl. Don Demar of the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations.

A doctor cited in court documents says it is unclear whether there will be lasting effects from the child's brain injuries.
