WASHINGTON (WCAX) A Vermonter is up for the post of ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia.
W. Patrick Murphy of Brattleboro sat before the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee Tuesday morning, with his wife and daughter sitting behind him.
The University of Vermont graduate and longtime state department employee thanked the president and secretary of state for their confidence. He said if confirmed, he'll continue to promote American values and democracy.
"I benefited from my upbringing in Vermont where I was exposed early to the value of public service. I have spent much of my career on Southeast Asia, and if confirmed, look forward to future contributions to this part of the world," Murphy said.
If he is confirmed, Murphy will face some challenges in his new job. Cambodia's ruling party has silenced their opposition for years and is only now considering letting them return to politics. Regionally, China's influence continues to grow as it invests in its neighbors. North Korea remains a geopolitical wildcard. And in Myanmar, refugees are fleeing the country by the hundreds of thousands.
