BENNINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) The man involved in an officer-involved shooting in Pownal last month will be formally charged in Bennington Thursday.
Police say Bernard Rougeau, 48, was reportedly drunk when he came out of the woods behind his home and was shot after refusing to drop his shotgun
Rougeau has a previous criminal history and is a convicted felon. As with several other police shootings, the officers had initially responded to help him, fearing that he might be suicidal.
Vermont Superior Court Judge William Cohen issued an arrest warrant for Rougeau on suspicion of the offenses of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, reckless endangerment and interference with access to emergency services.
He was released from a New York hospital this week and is due to be arraigned at 1 p.m. in Vermont Superior Court in Bennington.
