MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) The Vermont Senate voted 20-10 Thursday in favor of raising the state's minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2024.
Senators debated the bill for nearly two hours before the vote. They rejected an amendment that would have limited the wage increase to Chittenden County.
The bill is up for final approval in the Senate Friday before heading to the House where it could be scaled back.
Gov. Phil Scott, R-Vermont, opposes a minimum wage increase.
