GOOD MORNING,

EVERYONE, I'M DARREN PERRON.

RIGHT NOW ON A CHANNEL 3'S "YOU

CAN QUOTE ME," WE REMEMBER

BROADCASTING LEGEND TONY ADAMS,

A LOOK AT HIS LIFE BOTH ON

SCREEN AND OFF.

CHILDREN AT GREATER RISK OF

ABUSE DURING STAY AT HOME

ORDERS.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU

KNOW NEEDS HELP.

LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE SPANISH

FLU.

HOW THAT PANDEMIC CHANGED THE

RESPONSE TO COVID-19.

VERMONT'S ATTORNEY GENERAL JOINS

US TO TALK ABOUT NEW

RESTRICTIONS TO STOP THE SPREAD.

LIMITS ON GUEST LODGING AND HOW

THE STATE IS CRACKING DOWN EVEN

ON HOME RENTALS THROUGH SITES

LIKE AIRBNB.

THAT'S WHERE WE BEGIN THIS

MORNING.

DON'T COME TO VERMONT IF YOU

DON'T NEED TO.

THAT'S THE MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR

SCOTT TO TRY TO STOP THE SPREAD

OF COVID-19.

AND HE ORDERED THE CLOSURE OF

HOTELS, MOTELS, AND ONLINE

RENTALS ACROSS THE STATE.

CALVIN CUTLER BEGINS OUR

COVERAGE THIS MORNING.

>> Reporter: NEW ORDERS FROM

GOVERNOR SCOTT IN THE FIGHT

AGAINST COVID-19.

>> IF YOU DON'T NEED TO COME TO

VERMONT, PLEASE DON'T.

>> Reporter: THE GOVERNOR IS

DISCOURAGING PEOPLE FROM

COVID-19 HOT SPOTS SUCH AS NEW

YORK CITY FROM COMING TO

VERMONT.

IF THEY DO INCLUDE VERMONT

SNOWBIRDS RETURNING HOME, HE

WANTS THEM TO SELF-QUARANTINE

FOR 14 DAYS.

GOVERNOR SCOTT, HOWEVER, WARNS

AGAINST KNEEJERK FEELINGS OF

DIVISIVENESS.

>> WE CAN'T LET THIS BECOME A US

VERSUS THEM VIEW OF THE WORLD.

THAT'S NOT WHO WE ARE AS

AMERICANS AND CERTAINLY NOT AS

VERMONTERS.

>> Reporter: ADDITIONALLY, THE

STATE IS CRACKING DOWN ON

LODGING ESTABLISHMENTS THAT

STAYED OPEN IN DEFIANCE OF THE

GOVERNOR'S ORDERS FOR

NONESSENTIAL BUSINESSES TO

CLOSE.

>> FOLKS CAN EXPECT TO SEE

TROOPERS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT IN

THE PARKING LOT, CHECKING IN

WITH STAFF THERE TO ENSURE

COMPLIANCE.

>> Reporter: OUT OF 300 HOTELS

AND MOTELS IN VERMONT, THE STATE

SAYS THIS PAST WEEKEND, 41

HOTELS APPEAR TO BE IN

VIOLATION.

CHANNEL 3 SPOKE WITH SEVERAL OF

THEM WHO DECLINED TO COMMENT ON

CAMERA.

STAFF SAY THEY'RE CONCERNED

ABOUT TENANTS WHO RENT ON A

WEEKLY OR MONTHLY BASIS.

THE STATE SAYS CURRENT GUEST

STAY THROUGH THEIR CURRENT

RESERVATION DATE, BUT CANNOT

MAKE NEW RESERVATIONS.

THE ATTORNEY GENERAL SAYS

VIOLATING A EXECUTIVE ORDER CAN

CARRY A PENALTY OF UP TO $10,000

AND SIX MONTHS IN JAIL.

>> WE KNOW WE HAVE A ROLE TO

PLAY DURING THIS CRISIS.

WE'RE PREPARED TO DO OUR JOB.

THE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE IS

PREPARED TO DO ITS JOB.

>> Reporter: LODGING THAT HOUSES

ESSENTIAL WORKERS ARE STILL

ALLOWED TO OPERATE.

THE GOVERNOR STATES THAT THE

ENFORCEMENT OF THE NEW POLICY

WILL BE DIFFICULT, BUT IT'S UP

TO ALL OF US TO DO THE RIGHT

THING.

>> WE CAN ONLY EDUCATE AND

ADVOCATE TO DO THE RIGHT THING

TO PROTECT THEIR NEIGHBORS,

THEIR FRIENDS, THEIR FAMILY

MEMBERS.

THIS IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

>> Reporter: THE GOVERNOR SAYS

PEOPLE THAT ARE PART OF THE

COVID-19 RESPONSE OR JOBS THAT

ARE CONSIDERED ESSENTIAL BY THE

STATE ARE STILL ALLOWED TO CROSS

BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN STATE

LINES.

REPORTING IN BARRY, CALVIN

CUTLER, CHANNEL 3 NEWS.

>> Darren: STATE OFFICIALS

SPECIFICALLY CALLED OUT OWNERS

OF AIRBNB PROPERTIES, SAYING

ONLINE BOOKINGS ARE BAND, AND WE

FOUND OUT WHY THE EXTRA GUIDANCE

WAS NEEDED.

OUR SEARCH LOCATED 300-PLUS

LISTINGS IN VERMONT CLAIMING TO

BE AVAILABLE TO RENT THROUGH

APRIL 15th BEFORE THE STATE

CLARIFIED THAT HOME RENTALS WERE

INCLUDED.

A CONCERNED VIEWER SENT US A

LISTING IN DOVER THAT HAD BEEN

ADVERTISING TO OUT OF STATERS TO

COME TO VERMONT TO SHELTER IN

PLACE AND GIVING SPECIAL RATES.

THAT AD HAS NOW BEEN CHANGED.

WE ALSO FOUND A COUPLE OF OTHER

LISTINGS THAT SINCE TAKEN DOWN

ANY COVID-19 SPECIFIC LANGUAGE.

BOTH APPEAR TO BE IN COMPLIANCE.

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU OWN

A SHORT-TERM RENTAL PROPERTY AND

ADVERTISE IT ONLINE?

VERMONT'S ATTORNEY GENERAL JOINS

ME NOW.

TJ DONOVAN, GOOD MORNING.

>> Donovan: GOOD MORNING,

DARREN, THANKS FOR HAVING ME.

>> Darren: THANKS FOR BEING

HERE.

WHICH DATES ARE OFF LIMITS WHEN

PEOPLE CAN'T RENT RIGHT NOW?

IS THERE A TIMELINE?

>> Donovan: THE GOVERNOR'S

EXECUTIVE ORDER IS CLEAR,

DARREN.

RIGHT NOW NOBODY CAN RENT.

NOBODY CAN TAKE RESERVATIONS,

NOBODY CAN TAKE ONLINE

RESERVATIONS.

THERE ARE LIMITED EXCEPTIONS

UNDER THE GOVERNOR'S EXECUTIVE

ORDER, AND THAT IS FOR

VULNERABLE POPULATIONS,

HEALTHCARE WORKERS, MEMBERS OF

THE MILITARY, AND FIRST

RESPONDERS THAT ARE DOING

CRITICAL WORK THROUGH COVID-19

AND LONG HAUL TRUCKERS THAT ARE

DOING WORK IN TERMS OF THE

SUPPLY CHAIN FOR FOOD AND

SUPPLIES TO GET TO GROCERY

STORES.

MY OFFICE PUT OUT GUIDANCE.

YOU CAN INTO TO AGO.VERMONT.GOV

TO LOOK AT THIS GUIDANCE.

WE HAVE A CONTACT PERSON TO

ANSWER PEOPLE'S QUESTIONS, BUT

THE SHORT ANSWER RIGHT NOW,

DARREN, IS PEOPLE CAN'T RENT

THEIR PROPERTY THROUGH AIRBNB,

HOMEAWAY, VRBO RIGHT NOW.

THAT APPLIES TO HOTELS, MOTELS,

THE ENTIRE LODGING ESTABLISHMENT

IS SHUT DOWN PER THE GOVERNOR'S

EXECUTIVE ORDER.

>> Darren: AND DO WE KNOW,

THOUGH, FOR HOW LONG?

SAY SOMEBODY WANTS TO BOOK IN

JULY AT THIS POINT.

IS THAT OFF LIMITS AS WELL, OR

IS THERE A TIMEFRAME, SAY,

THROUGH APRIL?

>> Donovan: THERE IS NO

TIMEFRAME RIGHT NOW.

SO YOU CANNOT RENT FOR, SAY,

JULY OR SEPTEMBER OR OCTOBER

RIGHT NOW.

OBVIOUSLY, THE AGENCY OF

COMMERCE AND COMMUNITY

DEVELOPMENT WILL REVISIT THIS

RULE IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS, BUT

RIGHT NOW, IN AN EVIDENT TO GET

AHEAD OF THIS VIRUS -- IN AN

EFFORT TO GET AHEAD OF THIS

VIESHZ, YOU CAN'T RENT YOUR

PROPERTY, YOU CANNOT ADVERTISE

YOUR PROPERTY, YOU CANNOT RENT

YOUR PROPERTY FOR THE FALL

FOLIAGE SEASON RIGHT NOW.

THIS RULE WILL BE REVISITED IN A

COUPLE WEEKS, BUT THE UNDERLYING

POINT IS WE ALL GOT TO DO OUR

PART RIGHT NOW AND RIGHT NOW

THAT IS TO STAY AT YOUR HOME,

NOT RENT THE PROPERTY TO FOLKS

IN ORDER TO NOT SPREAD THE

VIRUS.

WHAT'S CRITICAL WITH THAT,

DARREN, AS YOU KNOW, PEOPLE CAN

BE ASYMPTOMATIC AND BE CARRYING

THIS VIRUS AND IN ORDER TO

PRESERVE AND CREATE THE CAPACITY

IN OUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM TO

TREAT PEOPLE WHO ARE SICK, WE

HAVE TO GUARD AGAINST THIS SURGE

OF TRYING TO FLATTEN OUT THIS

CURVE AND PART OF THIS ARE THESE

EMERGENCY ORDERS THAT THE

GOVERNOR HAS PUT OUT TO CEASE

AND SUSPEND BUSINESS OPERATIONS,

INCLUDING ALL LODGING

ESTABLISHMENTS, WHICH ARE

HOTELS, MOTELS, BED AND

BREAKFASTS, AND, OF COURSE, THE

AIRBNB, HOMEAWAY, VRBO.

SO PEOPLE CAN'T RENT, YOU CAN'T

ADVERTISE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF

THOSE LIMITED EXCEPTIONS FOR

VULNERABLE POPULATIONS,

HEALTHCARE WORKERS, LONG HAUL

TRUCKERS, OR MEMBERS OF THE

MILITARY, FIRST RESPONDERS THAT

ARE DOING CRITICAL WORK FOR

COVID-19.

BUT YOU CAN'T ADVERTISE ONLINE.

YOU HAVE TO TAKE THOSE

RESERVATIONS BY PHONE.

I SHOULD ALSO POINT OUT, DARREN,

THAT UNDER THE GOVERNOR'S

EXECUTIVE ORDER, THERE ARE SOME

PENALTIES ASSOCIATED WITH

VIOLATION OF THE GOVERNOR'S

EXECUTIVE ORDER.

>> Darren: SO LET'S TALK ABOUT

THOSE IN JUST A MOMENT, BUT TO

BE COMPLIANT, WHAT SHOULD THEY

DO?

REMOVE THE LISTING, BLOCK THE

DATES, WHAT?

>> Donovan: REMOVE THE LISTING

AND DON'T ADVERTISE.

DON'T RENT, DON'T ADVERTISE,

REMOVE THE LISTING.

I REACHED OUT TO AIRBNB

YESTERDAY, WE HAD A PRODUCTIVE

CONVERSATION.

OBVIOUSLY WE HAVE TO WORK WITH

THEM IN TERMS OF BLOCKING OR

SHUTTING DOWN VERMONT LISTINGS.

WE'RE REACHING OUT TO VRBO AND

HOMEAWAY TODAY TO DO THE SAME.

SO WE GOT TO -- WE HAVE TO HAVE

A CONSISTENT APPLICATION ACROSS

THE BOARD TO TREAT PEOPLE FAIRLY

HERE, BUT THE SHORT ANSWER IS

DON'T RENT, DON'T ADVERTISE.

>> Darren: SO THEY SIMPLY CAN'T

JUST DECLINE THE RESERVATION,

THEY HAVE TO TAKE IT OFF THE

SITE.

>> Donovan: YOU HAVE TO TAKE IT

OFF.

YOU CANNOT ADVERTISE PER THE

GOVERNOR'S EXECUTIVE ORDER TO

RENT YOUR PROPERTY RIGHT NOW.

>> Darren: HOW IS THIS BEING

ENFORCED AND WHAT ARE THOSE

PENALTIES THAT YOU ALLUDE TO

JUST A MOMENT AGO?

>> Donovan: SURE.

RIGHT NOW IN TERMS OF

ENFORCEMENT, WHAT WE'RE TRYING

TO DO AND WORKING WITH THE

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY AND,

OF COURSE, THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE

IS, LOOK, I'VE ALWAYS BELIEVED

THE BEST WAY TO ENFORCE THE LAW

IS TO GIVE PEOPLE THE

OPPORTUNITY TO COMPLY WITH IT.

VERMONTERS ARE GOOD PEOPLE.

WE'RE LAW-ABIDING PEOPLE, WE

WANT TO DO THE RIGHT THING, SO

RIGHT NOW WE'RE TRYING TO DO

EDUCATION AND RAISE AWARENESS.

THAT'S WHY WE PUT OUT GUIDANCE

LAST NIGHT.

THAT'S WHY WE'RE ON THE SHOW

WITH YOU THIS MORNING, DARREN,

TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT WHAT

THIS ORDER IS AND HOW YOU COMPLY

IT WITH, SO I REALLY URGE PEOPLE

TO DO TWO THINGS.

GO TO THAT WEBSITE AT

AGO.VERMONT.GOV OR YOU CAN GO TO

MY FACEBOOK PAGE, LOOK AT THE

GUIDANCE.

THERE'S A CONTACT PERSON FROM MY

OFFICE LISTED.

CALL US, WE WILL HELP ANSWER

YOUR QUESTIONS IN ORDER TO HAVE

YOU COMPLY WITH THE ORDER.

I THINK WORST CASE SCENARIO

HERE, THE GOVERNOR'S ORDER DOES

CARRY A CIVIL PENALTY OF A

$1,000 FINE PER VIOLATION.

WORTH CASE SCENARIO, AND I --

WORST CASE SCENARIO, AND I HOPE

NOBODY -- WE DON'T GET THERE.

THERE ARE CRIMINAL PENALTIES

WHICH CARRY A $500 FINE AND A

MAXIMUM OF SIX MONTHS

INCARCERATION.

LET ME BE CLEAR ABOUT THAT.

I DON'T WANT TO SEEK THOSE

PENALTIES.

IT WOULD HAVE TO BE A REALLY

EXTRAORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCE TO

SEEK SOME SORT OF CRIMINAL

PENALTY.

I TRUST VERMONTERS.

VERMONTERS ARE GOING TO DO THE

RIGHT THING, BUT TO ANSWER YOUR

QUESTION, THE GOVERNOR'S ORDER

DOES CARRY BOTH CIVIL AND

CRIMINAL PENALTIES.

BUT MY MESSAGE TO VERMONT IS

THIS: LET'S WORK TOGETHER.

WE ALL HAVE A JOB AND A ROLE TO

PLAY, AND THE FOLKS THAT MAY BE

RENTING THE PROPERTIES ON AIRBNB

AND VRBO, THEIR ROLE RIGHT NOW

IS NOT TO RENT THEM, NOT TO

ADVERTISE THEM, NOT TO TAKE

RESERVATIONS, AND TO STAY AT

HOME.

>> Darren: IF THERE ARE

RESERVATIONS ALREADY ON THE

BOOKS, SHOULD THOSE BE CANCELLED

IN THE NEAR TERM AND HOW FAR

OUT?

>> Donovan: I THINK THEY SHOULD

BE CANCELLED BECAUSE WE DON'T

KNOW HOW LONG THIS IS GOING TO

GO ON FOR.

RIGHT NOW THE GOVERNOR'S

EXECUTIVE ORDER IS IN PLACE AND

I THINK IT'S LIKELY, WE CAN ALL

ASSUME IT WILL PROBABLY BE

EXTENDED GIVEN THE

CIRCUMSTANCES.

I DON'T KNOW THAT FOR A FACT.

THAT'S MY ASSUMPTION, BUT I

THINK IT'S A FAIR ASSUMPTION.

AND SO, LOOK, I WANT TO BE

CLEAR.

IF YOU'RE RENTING RIGHT NOW, THE

TENANT CAN STAY IN THE PROPERTY

FOR THE DURATION OF THE RENTAL

AGREEMENT.

SAY FOR THIS SATURDAY.

BUT YOU CAN'T EXTEND IT.

YOU CANNOT EXTEND RENTALS RIGHT

NOW, BUT YOU CAN FINISH YOUR

CURRENT RENTAL AGREEMENT IF IT'S

FROM HERE TILL MONDAY, AND THAT

WAS IN EFFECT PRIOR TO THE

GOVERNOR'S EXECUTIVE ORDER.

BUT YOU CAN'T RENT, YOU CANNOT

ADVERTISE, YOU CAN'T TAKE

RESERVATIONS, AND LOOK, PEOPLE

WORK -- AND HERE'S THE OTHER

PART, DARREN.

THE GOVERNOR'S EXECUTIVE ORDER

REQUIRES ANYBODY COMING INTO THE

STATE OF VERMONT TO DO A 14-DAY

QUARANTINE.

SO IF YOU'RE COMING IN, YOU ARE

ORDERED TO BE QUARANTINED

REGARDLESS OF WHERE YOU'RE

COMING FROM, SO ALL THESE STEPS

ARE PUBLIC HEALTH STRATEGIES TO,

AGAIN, FLATTEN OUT THAT CURVE,

GET AHEAD OF THIS VIRUS, KEEP

PEOPLE SAFE AND HEALTHY, AND TO

ALLOW THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM TO

OPERATE AS EFFECTIVELY AND

EFFICIENTLY, TO HAVE THE

CAPACITY TO TREAT PEOPLE WHO ARE

SICK.

>> Darren: LET'S SWITCH GEARS

JUST FOR A MOMENT.

YOU WARNED AGAINST PRICE GOUGING

AND CONSEQUENCES IF PEOPLE DO

THAT ON ESSENTIAL GOODS.

ARE YOU SEEING THAT, ANY

REPORTS?

>> Donovan: WE'RE SEEING A FEW

REPORTS.

LUCKILY, I THINK WE'RE IN BETTER

SHAPE THAN OTHER STATES BECAUSE

OF OUR SIZE.

OUR SMALL.

SMALL BUSINESSES, OBVIOUSLY

THEIR CUSTOMERS ARE NEIGHBORS,

FRIENDS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS, BUT

WE ARE GETTING SOME REPORTS AND

WE'RE REACHING OUT TO THOSE

RETAIL ESTABLISHMENTS, ASKING

QUESTIONS.

OBVIOUSLY IT'S THE PRODUCTS THAT

YOU THINK OF, TOILET PAPER.

THERE WAS ONE FOR MACARONI AND

CHEESE, AND -- BUT THE REAL

ISSUE HAS BEEN THE ONLINE

SELLERS, THOSE THIRD-PARTY

SELLERS ON ONLINE PLATFORMS SUCH

AS AMAZON AND eBAY.

WE REACH OUT, WE SENT A LETTER

TO AMAZON AND eBAY AND SOME

OTHER ONLINE PLATFORMS LAST WEEK

ASKING THEM TO PARTNER WITH US

TO TAKE DOWN THOSE THIRD-PARTY

SELLERS UTILITYING THEIR

PLATFORMS THAT ARE TRYING TO RIP

PEOPLE OFF, AND AMAZON AND eBAY

WERE VERY RECEPTIVE TO THAT.

WE'RE GOING TO PARTNER WITH THEM

TO MAKE SURE THAT ANYTIME

ANYBODY IS TRYING TO

PRICE-GOUGE, WHICH IS TO INFLATE

THE PRICE ON A PRODUCT, THEY'LL

BE TAKEN DOWN FROM THOSE

PLATFORMS.

IF IN VERMONT YOU FEEL LIKE

YOU'RE A VICTIM OF PRICE

GOUGING, CALL MY CONSUMER

ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AT

1-800-649-2424.

WE WILL REACH OUT TO THE

BUSINESS AND ASK QUESTIONS,

BECAUSE I WANT VERMONTERS TO

KNOW THIS.

WE'RE GOING TO PROTECT THEM,

WE'RE GOING TO PROTECT THEIR

MONEY, AND WE'RE NOT GOING TO

LET ANYBODY GET RIPPED OFF

DURING THIS CRISIS.

THE OTHER THING, DARREN, THAT I

WANT TO MENTION, I HAVEN'T SEEN

THIS, BUT I SUSPECT IT WILL

HAPPEN, IS OBVIOUSLY WITH THIS

STIMULUS MONEY, WITH CHECKS

COMING, I WOULD SUSPECT PEOPLE,

THAT THERE WOULD BE SOME ONLINE

SCAMS FORTHCOMING REGARDING THE

STIMULUS MONEY, SO PEOPLE SHOULD

BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THAT.

MY UNDERSTANDING IS THIS MONEY

WILL BE DIRECTLY DEPOSITED INTO

PEOPLE'S BANK ACCOUNTS.

ONCE WE CONFIRM AND GET MORE

INFORMATION, WE'LL PUT OUT

GUIDANCE ON THAT, BUT PEOPLE

SHOULD BE VERY WARY OF ANY SORT

OF PHONE CALL OR EMAIL

SUGGESTING IT'S PART OF THE

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT STIMULUS

PACKAGE MONEY.

THAT'S GOING TO BE A DIRECT

DEPOSIT INTO YOUR BANK ACCOUNT,

SO BE AWARE OF THAT SCAM.

WE HAVEN'T SEEN IT, BUT SINCE

THERE'S MONEY ON THE TABLE, WE

KNOW THAT PEOPLE WILL TRY TO

SCAM FOLKS OUT OF THAT MONEY IN

THE COMING DAYS AND WEEKS.

>> Darren: TJ DONOVAN, THANK

YOU.

BE SAFE, STAY HEALTHY.

>> Donovan: DARREN, THANK YOU.

STAY SEA YOURSELF AND THANK YOU

WHAT WHAT YOU'RE DOING.

>> Darren: THANK YOU.

STILL AHEAD, PROTECTING KIDS WHO

MAY BE STUCK AT HOME WITH

ABUSIVE PARENTS AND COMPARING

PANDEMICS.

>> Cat: CAN LESSONS LEARNED FROM

A PAST PANDEMIC HELP VERMONT

DEALING WITH THE CURRENT

CORONAVIRUS.

I'M CAT VIGLIENZONI.

COMING UP, WE'LL TAKE A LOOK AT

THE HISTORIC SPANISH FLU'S

INFLUENCE ON VERMONT.

>> Darren: THE CORONAVIRUS HAS

CAUSED GLOBAL SHUTDOWNS AND

KILLED HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF

PEOPLE.

BUT IT'S NOWHERE NEAR THE

DEVASTATION CAUSED A CENTURY AGO

BY THE SPANISH FLU.

DESPITE ITS NAME, THE VIRUS

STARTED AT A MILITARY BASE IN

KANSAS IN MARCH 1918.

AND SPREAD AS MEN WENT TO THE

FRONT LINES OF WORLD WAR I.

A THIRD OF ALL PEOPLE WORLDWIDE

WERE INFECTED BY IT.

IT KILLED MORE THAN 100 MILLION

PEOPLE WORLDWIDE, THREE TIMES

MORE THAN THE WAR.

VERY FEW PEOPLE ARE ALIVE WHO

REMEMBER IT, BUT CAT VIGLIENZONI

FOUND OUT THERE ARE SIMILARITIES

IN OUR RESPONSE NOW.

>>.

>> Cat: MICHAEL SHERMAN KNOWS

HOW A PANDEMIC CAN RESHAPE A

SOCIETY.

NOT BECAUSE HE'S A DISEASE

EXPERT, BUT BECAUSE HE'S A

HISTORIAN.

>> IT'S AN INTERESTING MOMENT.

THE QUESTION IS INTERESTING

MOMENTS FOR HISTORIANS TO LOOK.

>> Cat: AND THE FORMER

HISTORICAL SOCIETY DIRECTOR SAYS

WITHOUT A DOUBT, IT WAS A

CRISIS.

IN 1918, NO ONE WAS PREPARED FOR

A VIRUS THAT ATTACKED SUDDENLY

WITH DEVASTATING IMPACT.

36,000 HERE WERE SICKENED BY

SPANISH FLU.

NO PART OF VERMONT WAS SPARED.

>> I DON'T THINK THERE WAS A

TOWN THAT DIDN'T HAVE AT LEAST

ONE CASE, SO IT WAS EVERYWHERE.

THE HOSPITALS WERE OVERCROWDED.

THERE WERE TOO MANY CASES FOR

THE HOSPITALS TO DEAL WITH.

>> Cat: MANY DOCTORS HAD GONE TO

WAR.

SHERMAN SAYS IT WAS CHAOS.

>> MORTICIANS RAN OUT OF

COFFINS, SO THEY WERE SHIPPING

BODIES UP TO BURLINGTON,

BASICALLY WINTER COFFINS AND

THEY HAD TO GET THE BODIES OUT

OF THEM AND THEN SEND THE

COFFINS BACK BECAUSE THERE WAS

EVEN A SHORTAGE OF THAT.

>> Cat: THE SPANISH FLU KILLED

1700 PEOPLE IN VERMONT IN JUST A

MATTER OF WEEKS.

BARRE WAS ONE OF THE HARDEST HIT

CITIES WITH GRANITE WORKERS'

LUNGS ALREADY COMPROMISED BY

SILLY COSIS, THEY FELL.

175 PEOPLE IN BARRE DIED AND 100

YEARS LATER, THEY ERECTED THIS

MONUMENT TO HONOR THEM.

IN HOPE CEMETERY, THERE ARE

LINES OF GRAVES.

SPANISH FLU WAS DIFFERENT

BECAUSE IT KILLED YOUNGER

PEOPLE.

SHERMAN MADE THIS CHART SHOWING

THE AGES OF THOSE WHO DIED IN

1918.

>> YOU SEE A BIG SPIKE IN THE

NUMBERS OF DEATHS, UP TO AGE 30.

>> Cat: A DIARY FROM A

MONTPELIER MAN WHO WORKED TO

COUNT THE SICK CAPTURED THE

SENSE OF PANIC.

>> HE WRITES, 25 BURIED TODAY,

CONDITIONS ARE GETTING WORSE ALL

THE WHILE.

TERRIBLE TIMES.

>> Cat: INDUSTRY WAS SHUT DOWN,

TOWNS CANCELLED PUBLIC MEETINGS

AND GATHERINGS, MANDATED

QUARANTINES, BANNED TRAVEL IN OR

OUT.

A STATEWIDE SHUTDOWN WAS IMPOSED

ON OCTOBER 4th, 1918.

>> EVERYTHING JUST CAME TO A

GRINDING HALT.

>> Cat: SHERMAN SAYS IT WAS

LIFTED A MONTH LATER.

THE VIRUS WILL RETURN IN 1919,

BUT WEAKER.

RECOVERY FROM IT BLENDED INTO

RECOVERY FROM THE WAR.

WHILE THERE WOULD BE OTHER

PANDEMICS OVER THE YEARS, NONE

OF THOSE EVER CAME CLOSE TO THE

SPANISH FLU'S TOLL.

>> THAT HAS NOT BEEN REPEATED.

>> Cat: WE ASKED HIM WHAT

PARALLELS HE SEES TO THE

CORONAVIRUS.

HE TOLD US HE NOTICES A SIMILAR

FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN.

>> BUT I DO GET THE SENSE OF

FRUSTRATION ABOUT NOT KNOWING

WHAT TO DO, NOT HAVING ANY SENSE

OF RECOURSE TO MEDICINE AS A

HELP OR UNCERTAINTY ABOUT THAT.

>> Cat: BUT HE SAYS THANKS TO

LESSONS LEARNED AND IMPROVEMENTS

IN MEDICINE, WE ARE UNLIKELY TO

SEE THE SAME DEVASTATION NOW.

IN MONTPELIER, CAT VIGLIENZONI,

CHANNEL 3 NEWS.

>> Darren: STAY AT HOME ORDERS

ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND IN OUR

REGION ARE MEANT TO STOP THE

SPREAD OF COVID-19, BUT COULD

THEY BE PUTTING VULNERABLE KIDS

AT GREATER RISK OF ABUSE?

IT'S A QUESTION I ASKED LINDA

JOHNSON, THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

DIRECTOR OF PREVENT CHILD ABUSE

VERMONT, AN ORGANIZATION THAT

HAS A HELP LINE FOR PARENTS.

LINDA JOHNSON, THANK YOU FOR

JOINING US.

>> Johnson: IT'S SO GOOD TO BE

WITH YOU, DARREN.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.

>> Darren: THANK YOU.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS HELP LINE.

WHAT IS IT, HOW DO FOLKS REACH

YOU?

>> Johnson: IT'S 1-800-CHILDREN

OR 229-5724.

THAT'S ALL PEOPLE HAVE TO DO IS

DIAL THAT NUMBER, LEAVE A

MESSAGE.

WE'LL CALL YOU BACK JUST AS FAST

AS POSSIBLE.

WE'RE NOT ALWAYS IN THE OFFICE

NOW, BUT WE ARE CHECKING OUR

MESSAGES CONSTANTLY, SO WE WILL

CALL YOU BACK IN A SPEEDY WAY.

>> Darren: AND WHAT CAN FOLKS

EXPECT WHEN THEY GET THAT

CALLBACK?

>> Johnson: SO THEY CAN EXPECT

SOMEONE TO LISTEN, REALLY

LISTEN, AND UNDERSTAND WHAT THE

PARENT IS CALLING ABOUT, AND

UNDERSTAND THE EXTRA STRESSES

AND THE SENSE OF ISOLATION THAT

SO MANY PARENTS AND CHILDREN ARE

FEELING RIGHT NOW.

>> Darren: SO YOU THINK THAT

THIS, YOU KNOW, ISOLATION, FOLKS

BEING STUCK AT HOME, THIS IS

ADDING TO STRESS AND PERHAPS

PUTTING KIDS AT GREATER RISK?

>> Johnson: YES.

I MEAN, REALLY, THE SAFETY NET

FOR CHILDREN HAS ALWAYS BEEN

SCHOOL, TEACHERS, SCHOOL

COUNSELORS, THE SCHOOL STAFF AND

FACULTY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE

FOR KIDS.

AND AS WELL AS DOCTORS AND

REGULAR APPOINTMENTS AND

CLINICIANS WHO THEY SEE.

AND SO NOT HAVING THOSE EYES ON

CHILDREN WHO ARE AT HIGH RISK

RIGHT NOW CAN ADD TO THE

PROBLEMS THAT CHILDREN

EXPERIENCE.

>> Darren: DO MENTAL HEALTH

ISSUES GET MAGNIFIED DURING

SITUATIONS LIKE THIS?

>> Johnson: GOOD QUESTION,

DARREN.

THEY ABSOLUTELY DO.

THERE'S NOTHING LIKE BEING

BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE

ALONE TO MAKE THINGS SEEM MUCH

WORSE, AND REALLY, THAT'S THE

VERY DEFINITION OF A CRISIS IS

THAT SENSE OF I'M ALONE WITH IT.

AND WE WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW THAT

THERE'S 211, THERE'S THE PARENTS

HELP LINE AT 1-800-CHILDREN.

THERE ARE MENTAL HEALTH CENTERS

ALL ACROSS THE STATE THAT HAVE

THEIR OWN NUMBERS TO CALL, AND

WE'RE ALL HERE IN FORCE FOR

PARENTS.

BUT I ALSO WANT TO SAY THAT

BEING HOME ALONE WITH YOUR

CHILDREN AND FOR CHILDREN WITH

THEIR PARENTS 24/7 IS BOTH A

STRESS AND AN OPPORTUNITY.

SO THERE ARE GOOD THINGS THAT

PARENTS AND CHILDREN CAN DO.

THEY CAN HAVE A FAMILY MEETING

AND STRUCTURE THEIR DAYS.

HAVING PREDICTABLE DAYS IS SUCH

A HELP TO CHILDREN AND TO

PARENTS.

AND EVERYONE CAN HELP MAKE UP

THE SCHEDULE AND MAKE UP THAT

STRUCTURE, AND HAVE A SENSE OF

CONTROL ABOUT THEIR DAY AND WHAT

TO EXPECT.

IT'S VERY, VERY IMPORTANT TO

MAKE THINGS PREDICTABLE AND TO

DO FUN THINGS THAT MAYBE YOU'VE

NEVER DONE TOGETHER.

>> Darren: LINDA JOHNSON, THANK

YOU SO MUCH.

WE WILL ALSO PUT THAT PHONE

NUMBER UP ON OUR WEBSITE,

WCAX.COM.

THANK YOU AGAIN.

TAKE CARE AND BE SAFE.

>> Johnson: THANKS, DARREN, YOU

TOO.

>> Darren: THANK YOU.

>>> NEXT, WE REMEMBER OUR FRIEND

TONY ADAMS.

>> Darren: IT'S BEEN A SAD WEEK

FOR US HERE AT WCAX.

WE LOST A MEMBER OF OUR FAMILY

AND VERMONT LOST A BROADCASTING

LEGEND.

TONY ADAMS PASSED AWAY AT THE

AGE OF 95.

I MET TONY WHEN I WAS IN HIGH

SCHOOL.

I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO WIN A

COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP FROM THE

VERMONT ASSOCIATION OF

BROADCASTERS.

THAT WAS ALMOST 30 YEARS AGO.

I WAS SO EXCITED THAT NIGHT, IN

LARGE PART BECAUSE I GOT TO MEET

TONY ADAMS, WHO WAS SO KIND AND

ENCOURAGING TO THIS KID FROM THE

KINGDOM.

MANY OF US GREW UP WATCHING

TONY.

WE INVITED HIM INTO OUR HOMES

EVERY NIGHT.

ROGER GARRITY LOOKS BACK ON HIS

LONG CAREER HERE AT CHANNEL 3.

>> Roger: TONY ADAMS WAS HERE

WHEN TELEVISION BEGAN IN

VERMONT.

HE WAS ALREADY ON THE AIR AT

WCAX RADIO AND MADE THE SWITCH

TO TV WHEN CHANNEL 3 WENT ON THE

AIR IN 1954.

>> Tony: IT WAS TRAUMATIC TO SAY

THE LEAST, MAKING THE

TRANSITION.

I HAD MANY SLEEPLESS NIGHTS

LEADING UP TO IT.

>> Roger: BUT TONY QUICKLY

SETTLED IN AT THE ANCHOR DESK

AND SOON BECAME SYNONYMOUS WITH

VERMONT SPORTS.

>> Tony: OUR SPECIAL GUEST

TONIGHT IS ONE OF THE TOP NAMES

IN BASEBALL.

>> Roger: TONY WAS A TRUE SPORTS

JOURNALIST FROM THE DAYS BEFORE

FLASHY GRAPHICS AND MUSIC VIDEO

HIGHLIGHT REELS.

HE RELIED INSTEAD ON INSIGHTFUL

INTERVIEWS WITH SUCH SPORTS

LEGENDS AS JACKIE ROBINSON.

>> Tony: YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED

TO KNOW A LARGE SEGMENT OF OUR

VIEWING AUDIENCE IS IN MONTREAL.

I KNOW THAT'S YOUR FORMER

STOMPING GROUNDS.

>> Roger: A TRIP TO SPRING TRAIN

BROUGHT BASEBALL'S BEST INTO

VERMONT'S LIVING ROOM.

>> I HOPE I PLAY EVERY GAME.

>> Roger: BUT IT WAS COVERAGE OF

LOCAL COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL

TEAMS THAT TONY LOVED MOST.

>> Tony: HELLO ONCE AGAIN,

EVERYBODY, AND WELCOME TO

UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT HOCKEY

LIVE.

I THINK LOCAL IS VERY IMPORTANT.

>> Roger: AND WHAT HIGH SCHOOL

SPORTS CHAMPION WILL EVER FORGET

THEIR MOMENT ON THE AREA WITH

TONY ADAMS.

>> Tony: JIM, WHAT DID THE COACH

SAY TO YOU AT HALFTIME?

YOU GUYS WERE IN A TIGHT BALL

GAME.

>> HE SAID WE HAVE TO GO OUT AND

PLAY BETTER IF WE WANTED TO WIN

AND THAT'S WHAT WE DID.

>> Roger: TONY FINALLY LEFT THE

SPORTS DESK IN MAY OF 1989?

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO POST ABOUT

THIS JOB?

>> Tony: I'LL MISS THE PEOPLE,

THE CONNECTIONS WE HAVE WITH

COACHES AND PLAYERS.

>> Roger: HE SAID GOODBYE TO THE

COACHES, THE PLAYERS AND THE

SPORTS FANS, ENDING THE LONGEST

CONTINUOUS BROADCASTING CAREER

IN THE COUNTRY.

>> Tony: IT ISN'T EASY LEAVING

YOU AFTER COMING INTO YOUR HOMES

FOR ALMOST 35 YEARS.

TO BE HONEST, I'LL MISS YOU.

I LOVE YOU ALL.

TONY ADAMS, GOOD NIGHT, GOOD

SPORTS.

>> Roger: AFTER HIS RETIREMENT,

TONY RECEIVED MANY HONORS FOR

HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE

SPORTING COMMUNITY.

HE WAS INDUCTED INTO THE VERMONT

BROADCASTING HALL OF FAME AND

OFFERED A COMFORTABLE SPOT TO

SPEND HIS RETIREMENT, BUT TONY'S

CAREER WASN'T OVER BY A LONG

SHOT.

HE REMAINED FOR MANY YEARS AS

HOST OF THE HOME AND FARM SHOW

"ACROSS THE FENCE.">> Tony: WE'RE GOING TO GO INTO

THE RECOVERY ROOM.

>> Roger: HE ALSO WORKED AS A

VOLUNTEER THE A UVM MEDICAL

CENTER FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS.

>> I THINK HE'S A GREAT GUY,

REALLY.

>> Roger: AND --

>> Tony: THE MAIL RUN.

>> Roger: HE GETS COMING TO WORK

AT WCAX EVERY DAY TO DELIVER OUR

MAIL.

AND, OF COURSE, TO SAY HI TO

FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES.

>> WE'RE GOING TO MISS YOU.

>> Roger: THANKS FOR THE

MEMORIES, TONY, AS WE SAY

GOODBYE TO A GOOD SPORT.

>> Tony: UNTIL TOMORROW NIGHT AT

THIS SAME TIME, TONY ADAMS, GOOD

NIGHT, GOOD SPORTS.
