Dartmouth holds narrow day one lead at Eastern Championships

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Dartmouth holds a 16 point lead over Vermont after day one of the Eastern Championships/ Middlebury Winter Carnival Friday at the Rikert Nordic Center and Middlebury Snowbowl.

In the team competition, Dartmouth won two events, the women's 5K classic cross-country race and the men's slalom, while UVM won the men's 10K and women's slalom.

Individually, Dartmouth's Katherine Ogden won the 5K classic at Rikert, with Big Green teammates Lydia Blanchet and Jauren Jortberg finishing third and fourth. UVM's Alanya Sonnesyn, who has six victories so far this season, placed second, but only one over Catamount finishing in the top ten.

The men's 10K saw two Vermont natives reach the podium. Woodstock's Zane Fields, a junior at Colby, earned the win, his fifth of the season, while Bowdoin freshman Elliot Ketchel from Warren finished third.

Middlebury's Jacob Volz held the lead early on his home course before settling for fourth. Vermont's depth carried them to the team win as the Cats placed sixth, seventh and eighth with South Burlington sophomore Bill Harmeyer leading the way.

In the slalom races at the Snowbowl, after sitting in sixth place following the first run, UVM senior Sandy Vietze from Warren put down the fastest second run of the day to leap into second place in the men's slalom.

But the win went to Dartmouth's Tanguy Nef. The sophomore topping Vietze by seven-tenths of a second for the win, his sixth victory and eighth podium finish in nine races.

In the women's slalom, UVM and Dartmouth swept the top six spots. Dartmouth placing third, fourth and sixth, with junior and Green Mountain Valley School alum Alexa Dlouhy reaching the podium in the bronze position. Vermont goes first, second, fifth with freshman Francesca English earning her second runner up finish of the season and the Paula Moltzan Show continues as the sophomore won for the eighth time in eleven races this season.

The Eastern Championships conclude on Saturday with a pair of mass start freestyle races at Rikert and the men's and women's giant slalom at Snowbowl.
