EAST BURKE, Vt. (WCAX) Rutland's Dylan Roussel and Mt. Mansfield's Viva Goetze put down dominant second runs to claim individual state titles in the Giant Slalom at Burke Mountain on the first day of the VPA Alpine Skiing Championships Monday.
Roussel had finished third in the boys race a year ago, with his brother Austin topping the podium. On Monday, the sophomore Raider held a lead of more than a second and a half after the first run and expanded it to nearly three full seconds overall.
Rex Rubenstein of defending team champion Harwood was second and Burr and Burton's Blake Green finished third. St. Johnsbury appears to be the favorite after placing three skiers in the top eight, with Hugo Hong leading the way in fifth.
The race was much closer at the top on the girls side. Goetze entered the second run more than a second behind CVU's Becca Provost, but the Cougar star edged the Redhawk by 1.27 seconds on the second run to claim the crown by just over two-tenths of a second. Keirnan Beattie of Rutland was third.
The championships conclude Tuesday with the slalom races.
