MONTPELIER, Vt. Spectacular performances from Nighthawks’ pitchers Reid VanScoter and Jordan DiValerio helped guide Upper Valley to a 3-1 road victory over the Vermont Mountaineers on Saturday night.
Anthony Quirion (Lamar University) doubled to lead off the second inning, and later came around to score on an Eddie Modica (Long Island University) RBI single.
Later in the inning, Hunter Gibson (Wichita State University) drove in Anthony Meduri (Binghamton University) on a fielder’s choice to put the Nighthawks up 2-0.
Vermont’s Nate Grys countered in the bottom of the second inning with a solo homer to lead off the inning, but his efforts would not be enough to overpower the Nighthawks.
Greg Hardison’s (UNC Greensboro) RBI double in the top of the 6th inning provided an insurance run to give Upper Valley a 3-1 lead, which stuck for the remainder of the contest.
Upper Valley starter Reid VanScoter (Binghamton University) hurled a spectacular five innings, in which he gave up three hits, one run, a lone walk, and fanned four Mountaineer hitters. Jordan DiValerio (St. Joseph’s University) threw a near-perfect four innings of hitless relief, walking one, and striking out three. Vermont starter Ross Mintzer was charged with the loss.
The Nighthawks return home tomorrow for a Father’s Day doubleheader with the Ocean State Waves. First pitch is schedule for 4:00 PM, with the second game slated to start at 6:00 PM.
