BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Vermont Catamounts broke a scoreless deadlock with a pair of goals in the second period and cruised to a 4-1 win over the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers on the opening night of the Catamount Cup.
Joey Cipollone and Ace Cowans scored in the second period to give UVM a 2-0 lead. Vald Dzhioshvili found the net 6:35 into the third to make it a 3-0 game. The Chargers cut the lead to 3-1 midway thru the period, but Matt O'Donnell put the game on ice with an empty net goal in the closing seconds.
Stefanos Lekkas made 14 saves in the victory. Vermont improves to 6-8-1 overall with the victory while Alabama-Huntsville drops to 3-16-0 overall. Northeastern beat RPI 3-2 in overtime in the opening game of the tournament Friday afternoon.
On Saturday, Northeastern will face Huntsville at 4pm. Vermont closes out the tournament against RPI at 7pm.
