John Dominates Burlington Invitational, St. J Takes Team Title

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) Several of the best athletes in the state converged on Burlington High School for the 46th annual Burlington Invitational on Saturday.

Tyler Muttilainen of Mt. Mansfield just missed from 6 feet, 9.25 inches on the high jump, but broke a 16 year old state record by clearing 6 feet 8.5 inches.

That was part of a pretty solid day for the Cougars. In the boys 400, a tight race between Eli Ogilvie and Carson Bianchi of Milton, but Ogilvie edged him out by a quarter of a second.

The boys 300 meter hurdles went to Jamal Hankey of Essex, he was able to edge out Colchester's George Cummings by about a tenth of a second. Hankey was part of the 4x4 relay winning team as well.

It was a very tight race in the boys 100 meters, too close to call on first look, but Rivendell's Owen Pelletier won by six-hundredths of a second to break his own D4 state record.

On the girls side, another strong showing from Molly McCreedy of U-32 who won the discus and set a new state record in shot put at 42 feet, 5 inches.

And a couple other familiar faces had strong showings. Katherine Cowan of St. Johnsbury claimed the win in the 300 meter hurdles. She also finished second in the 110 hurdles and the long jump as St. J claimed the team win

But it was Sonia John of Rice with the dominant effort of the day. The UVM commit was unstoppable in the short distance races, claiming victories in the 100, 200, 400, and anchored the 4x400 relay win.

These athletes will be back at it in 2 weeks at the Essex invitational, which is a New England qualifier.
