SPARKS, Md. Ian MacKay is one of the best players to ever take the field for the UVM men's lacrosse team, sitting third on the school's all time points leaderboard and captaining this year's Cats to their first 10 win season in more than 2 decades. On Wednesday night, MacKay added another title to his resume: Major League Lacrosse Draft Pick.
The Chesapeake Bayhawks selected MacKay in the second round of the 2018 MLL draft with the 13th overall pick. MacKay became the highest draft selection in program history just the second Catamount to ever be drafted into Major League Lacrosse after Peter Hein back in 2007.
MacKay will have somewhat of a familiar face joining him in Annapolis: UVM offensive assistant Jake Bernhardt is a member of the Ohio Machine, but his younger brother Jesse Bernhardt is a member of the Bayhawks.
The MLL holds its draft in the Spring so college graduates can find housing or travel arrangements to be able to play once their season is done. The Bayhawks season begins on April 21st.
