BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) UVM basketball players will be dribbling in a newly named home.
When the Catamounts finally tip off in their new arena a couple years down the road, they will be doing so in the Tarrant Event Center.
Rich and Deb Tarrant, longtime donors who have contributed to numerous projects at UVM, St. Michael's College and throughout Vermont, are making a $15 million donation to UVM's new $95 million multipurpose facility project.
That project includes major upgrades to Gutterson Fieldhouse, a new health and wellness facility for the entire student body and a new arena for the UVM basketball programs that will now bear the Tarrant name.
Rich Tarrant was a first-team All-American basketball player at St. Michael's and co-founded IDX in 1969. His three sons all played sports at UVM-- two basketball and one hockey.
For Tarrant, supporting UVM in this project is just returning the favor for what the school did for him when he was just getting his business off the ground.
"Our very first customer was the University of Vermont Health Center. I'll never forget that day and I'll never forget the University of Vermont. Thank you very much," Tarrant said, presenting the gift prior to Tuesday's game against St. Bonaventure.
The gift is one of the largest ever made to UVM and the largest capital gift in its history. The arena is expected to be completed by 2021.
