CASTLETON, Vt. (WCAX) The Oxbow, Essex, and Whitchester softball teams took state titles Saturday afternoon at Castleton University.
The Olympians claimed a second straight crown by taking down BFA-Fairfax 2-1. Madison Fornwalt pitched the complete game in the victory. It was the 8th championship in program history.
The Hornets of Essex fell to Mt. Anthony in an all-time classic last Spring, but they were determined not to let that happen again. EHS got a mammoth home run from Makenna Thorne to break a 1-1 tie, and they held on for the 3-2 win. It is also the 8th title in school history.
Whitchester saw a 7-4 fifth inning lead slip away, but Toni Turner walked it off with a hit up the middle to give the program an 8-7 win and a state title in its final season. Whitcomb and Rochester High Schools have fielded a combined team for the past three seasons, but both schools are closing.
