UVM Takes Down Norwich

BURLINGTON, Vt. The Norwich University women's basketball team hit the road Wednesday evening to open up their season against the NCAA Division I University of Vermont Catamounts, dropping the contest by a 75-31 final score.

The Catamounts came out on fire in the first quarter, hitting six three-pointers to take a 24-4 lead as the Cadets attempted to get their feet under them in the new season. Senior captain Shyann Josler (Thetford Center, Vt.) kept her team in the game by converting on two fiercely contested layups deep in the UVM paint.

The Cadets fought back in the second quarter capping a 9-1 run with an Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) three to cut the lead to 12. Junior Vanessa Fleury (Lebanon, N.H.) drained a three from well behind the three-point line to beat the buzzer and close out the quarter, during which the Cadets outscored UVM 15-7 to head into the half trailing the Catamounts by only 12 points.

The second half saw the Cadets come out strong, as an Oliver free throw cut the UVM lead down to single digits. Multiple times in the third quarter NU came close to catching up to the Catamounts, cutting the lead to as little as eight points at one point. UVM closed the quarter on an 18-1 run, however, and extended the lead out to a commanding 25 points heading into the final stanza.

UVM wrapped up the game in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Cadets 23-4 and wrapping up the 75-31 victory.

Overall the Cadets put on a strong performance against an exceptionally talented Division I opponent on their home court, the first match-up with an NCAA DI team for Norwich since the 1990s. Veterans lead the way for Norwich, as Josler stayed on the floor almost the entire game, logging 36 minutes and leading the team with 11 points in the game. Classmate and fellow captain Arianna Harrison (Vernon, Vt.) led the team with five rebounds and two assists. Fleury poured in 10 points, and the team as a whole was able to force 21 Catamount turnovers.

Next weekend the Cadets will travel to Bridgewater, Massachusetts for a weekend tournament featuring Colby-Sawyer College, Endicott, and Bridgewater State. NU will open up their home season on December 1st with the first game of the annual Hockenbury Classic taking place at 6:00 pm against Bay Path College.
