How to spot and avoid romance scams

CONCORD, N.H. (WCAX) - Valentine’s Day is a time for love but some romance is not too sweet. Romance scams are a growing concern and this time of year it’s even worse.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office says scammers will usually create a fake persona online to manipulate people’s feelings to steal money or get personal information.

Scams can start on social media, dating apps or text messages. Then the scammers try to get close to you.

There are some red flags to keep an eye out for to protect yourself, like someone asking for money in a seemingly urgent situation, or someone who won’t meet in person.

Experts say the best way to stay safe is not answering unsolicited messages, limiting how much personal information you post on social media and never sending money to someone you haven’t met in person.
