RUTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) - New technology is dotting the streets of the Marble City to help reduce littering.

Casella donated 10 new “high-tech” trash and recycling bins to the city of Rutland. They feature built-in solar-powered compactors to prevent overflow and let the waste company monitor collection activity. Downtown businesses say the $80,000 upgrade is necessary to keep sidewalks, doorsteps, and streets clean.

“The existing trash cans had been around for quite a long time, and having new trash bins was definitely needed and also these smart trash bins will be able to have better collection times and also prevent overflowing, which was a major concern for downtown businesses,” said Hal Issente with the Downtown Rutland Partnership.

Casella says the old bins will be cleaned and reused as American flag drop-boxes for the company.
